Toolkit

Career essentials.

Practical tips that take five minutes to read and a lifetime to apply.

Tip 01

Write a CV that gets read

A clean one-page CV with measurable achievements beats a long, generic one. Lead with impact, not job titles.

Use the format: "Did X, using Y, achieving Z."

Tip 02

Prepare for remote interviews

Most interviews happen on Zoom or Google Meet. Test your camera, mic, and connection 24 hours in advance — not 5 minutes before.

Pick a quiet, well-lit corner with a plain wall behind you.

Tip 03

Build a portfolio online

Employers want to see your work. Free tools — Canva, GitHub, Behance, LinkedIn — let you publish a portfolio in a day.

Start with 3 strong samples — quality over quantity.

Tip 04

Find a mentor

A mentor opens doors that no application form ever will. Reach out on LinkedIn with a short, specific message — not a generic ask.

"I admire X you wrote/built — could I ask one question?" works.

Mentorship

Looking for a mentor?

UWA matches young professionals and refugees with mentors in tech, business, creative fields, and sport. Tell us where you are and where you want to go — we will connect you with someone who has walked that road.
